Mark Schaller to create artwork for Melbourne Cup Carnival

Share

Contemporary street artist, Mark Schaller, will create a bespoke artwork to be installed at the Emirates marquee for the upcoming Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The 5.4metre x 2metre installation will pay homage to the historic and contemporary architecture of Germany, blending modern art and culture with the love of street art that has inspired both Germany and Australia.

Schaller hopes to combine his love for 20th Century German art with the energy surrounding the Spring Racing Carnival. “There is a group of German expressionists called Die Bruke who proved that art did not have to depict reality,” Schaller said, “[they] were not afraid to distort colour, scale and space which I’ll be hoping to create with my piece”.

He works across a variety of art forms including sculpture, ceramics and painting, and will incorporate a number of these techniques into the new three-dimensional artwork.

The artwork will be developed on marine plywood with a treated pine backing to protect against changing weather conditions. The installation, which will weigh approximately 60 kilograms in total, will be transported in two panels to be fixed on the existing exterior wall of the marquee.
