There is something enchanting about the Aviatrix range of wallpapers. Part adventure, part whimsy, part flight of fancy: the range is very well-named in its ability to conjure the romantic ideal of a tomboyish adventuress ready to take on the world. More than an idea, it is a style that runs through the imagery from flamboyant peacocks to drawn worlds of magic and threaded leaves, whereby the feminine, while certainly present, is far from girly.

The theatrical and drawn graphics are the original work of Gabriela Tylesova and Emelia Simcox, digitally realised on fine German Vlies. Tylesova’s background in art and stage design led to studies with NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art), after which she pursued a career designing for film, theatre, events, opera and, most recently, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies.

Simcox also has a background in art, including a degree from COFA (the University of Sydney’s College of Fine Arts) in graphic design and an ongoing art practice. Bringing these creative worlds together, Aviatrix was formed in 2012 with the duo’s inaugural showing at Decoration + Design 2014, Sydney.

An off-the-shelf range is available online (growing constantly), with bespoke iterations and development available on request. Of note, a bespoke range of Aviatrix fabrics and papers (including the very funky Aerostat) will be featured in the Australian Opera’s 2014 production of The Turk in Italy. An accompanying collection of soft furnishings and fabrics will soon be added to the range.
