Nestled in a leafy quiet street in Sydney’s Woollahra, this home by Sequence Studio was in need of some series reconfiguration and refreshment.

Helmed by director Loretta Lovecek, Sequence Studio was tasked with the brief to turn a family’s newly purchased home into a space that suited their own individual lifestyle.

While the house had good bones and was set in an ideal location, the previous renovation had left the layout impractical and unsuitable for the clients and their kids in their late teens, plus two dogs.

“A renovation to the property by a previous owner had resulted in a clumsy layout and unnecessary secondary internal staircase,” explains Lovecek about the original design of Woollahra Residence.

“The main kitchen dining space was too small for entertaining, with the living space at the other end of the floor plan hindering the ability of the family to spend time together. A combined laundry and bathroom space on the ground floor felt utilitarian and unwelcoming.”

With this in mind, Sequence Studio reconfigured the rooms to allow for the existing interior footprint for greater advantage. Changes included creating two living spaces at the opposite end of the ground floor, allowing teens and adults to separate with their friends.

Sequence Studio also kept a more formal living room towards the front of the home untouched, while a large kitchen and living space overlooking the garden is designed as a more casual space featuring solid timber floorboards and a classic Carrara marble backdrop.

“The family love entertaining, the changing environment has meant that working and studying from home has become part of daily life.

“It was important that the newly purchased house was reconfigured to allow for their lifestyle,” adds Lovecek.

Staying on the ground floor, the laundry/bathroom required cumbersome elements to be hidden away in full height joinery, while timber, a classic stone and a large butlers sink were introduced to create a sense of elegance while still being a functional space for the family and their dogs.

With a classic neutral and textural palette in terms of the built form, it was also important to inject colour through the soft furnishings and art.

Pieces from Great Dane, Ke-Zu and Armadillo fill the home, with art from Curatorial and Co throughout.

“The family love being in, with a puppy recently joining the family,” concludes Lovecek about Woollahra Residence’s second chance at life.

“The outcome is a refined and warm home the family can enjoy together and with friends”
