Client: GBW Constructions Pty Ltd

The SILT apartments, located under the Story Bridge on the edge of the Brisbane River, are an exciting residential development that sold out in less than five weeks due to the unique design and prime location.

At last week’s Queensland Architecture Awards, bureau^proberts took out the Job & Froud Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing. The jury described the project as a unique and confident piece of architecture, immaculately detailed and built to create a memorable experience. SILT is also in the running for an international accolade, shortlisted in the WAF awards’ Housing category. WAF will be announced in Singapore in October.

Bureau^proberts worked with the developer to challenge stringent council planning controls that restricted development on the 334 square metre site to a large single dwelling. The non-conventional design solution satisfied council, while ensuring it was commercially viable and responded appropriately to its context.

The three bedroom and study apartments are designed around an internal pod that houses the kitchen, laundry and powder room, with the living and bedroom spaces around this pod. All the finishes are based on a natural palette in both colour and material. The apartments are orientated to maximise views, while openings, screens and hoods, reduce the exposure from the sun and the noise from traffic.

The end result is an outstanding project that sits comfortably on its site, connecting with the Brisbane River and complementing the historic Story Bridge and surrounding landscape in scale, form and materiality.
