Entries for the 2021 ArchiTeam Awards are open until 4 October with the finalists set be announced on 20 October.

Now in its 14th year, the awards program open exclusively to ArchiTeam members has modified its two residential categories to better reflect the diversity of Australian homes.

To help you get your entry in before the 2021 deadline, ADR sat down with Foomann Architects director and Architeam secretary Jamie Sorman to talk all things ArchiTeam Awards.

ADR: What are the ArchiTeam Awards?

Jamie Sorman: ArchiTeam Cooperative is a member organisation that supports small practice Architects. The awards are an opportunity for our members to showcase the amazing work they have completed in the last three years. It culminates in an exhibition, talks and events in November.

Does it cost to enter?

JS: For ArchiTeam members, the first entry is free with subsequent entries at $100 each. Non ArchiTeam members can join ArchiTeam for $330 to participate.

Who are the judges this year and why did you select them?

JS: The judges are a mix of established architects and design specialists from around Australia.

The 2021 jury is chaired by ArchiTeam member Ray Cheung (Krisna Cheung, VIC).

We are excited to have the legendary Mary Featherston (Featherston, VIC), Fleur Watson (Open House Melbourne, VIC), David Welsh (Welsh + Major, NSW), Melody Chen (Ateller Chen Hung, QLD), Isabelle Toland Alleen Sage, NSW) and Ross Brewin (Gilby + Brewin ,TAS) also on this year’s jury.

What are the categories?

JS: Due to the growth of the awards program and the diversity in the size of projects ArchiTeam members produce, we have introduced a few changes.

Along with clarifying the entry and judging process, we have split up the residential categories by budget and consolidated the commercial categories.

We have also introduced a new rule that requires participants to be from an office of no more than 10 full time staff (or the part time equivalent). This is underpinned by our mission to support small practice architects.

• Residential New: up to $1m
• Residential New: $1m+
• Residential Alterations and Additions: up to $500k
• Residential Alterations and Additions: $500k – $1m
• Residential Alterations and Additions: over $1m+
• Commercial, Community and Public Award
• Unbuilt Award
• Innovation and Contribution
• Passive House Scholarship (design competition)

Can you tell us what you love most about the ArchiTeam Awards?

JS: What I like best about the awards is getting such a great overview of what our colleagues are producing. ArchiTeam is a very convivial and supportive co-op, and entering our awards is not just about the chance to win, but also about participating in the ArchiTeam community. It’s a celebration.

How do I enter?
