Seaton Mckeon was awarded the inaugural Australian Furniture Design Award (AFDA) in 2015. It was this entry that led to the opportunity for the young, up-and-coming designer to create a furniture range, distributed by Stylecraft. Mckeon’s final product is an outdoor seating collection titled Paperclip. Not limited to a singular setting, Paperclip is at home in corporate, hospitality or residential settings.

The range includes a lounger, along with a chair, and stackable stools in three heights.

The selection of materials was critical for use in outdoor scenarios. The range has been refined to two main materials – steel with a zinc powdercoat finish and locally sourced Merbau timber armrests. The Paperclip lounge also comes with an option of wire or perforated sheet metal.

Another key feature of the range is its stackability, the lounge, chair and bar stool are able to be stacked up to four units. Variations for the bar stool include a wire, perforated metal or timber seat, and it also comes in two height options.

Light and airy, with a robust undercurrent, Paperclip is perfectly suited to an afternoon by the pool, breakfast on the terrace or a wine in the courtyard.

Mckeon studied industrial design at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Having worked across product design, experience design, wayfinding, transportation, and urban design, Seaton’s journey from 2015 AFDA winner through to the launch of the outdoor seating range, Paperclip, has been an enriching one. Presented by Stylecraft and JamFactory, the AFDA has a mandate of encouraging innovation in furniture design and fostering new opportunities for furniture manufacturing in Australia.

Mckeon’s design ethos surrounds making an experience better through good design. With a focus on the human element in design solutions, from a doorknob that fits the hand perfectly, to the right height, weight and swing of a shopping trolley, Mckeon’s future is looking bright in the Australian furniture design landscape.
