From the 28th of August to the 11th of October, RMIT Design Hub will play host to the interactive Bloom installation, created by Alisa Andrasek and Jose Sanchez from the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL.

Initially conceived by Andrasek and Sanchez for the 2012 London Olympic Games, Bloom is described by the pair as an “urban toy, distributed social game and collective gardening experience”.

Masses of vibrant pink recycled plastic cells with three connection points are placed in public parks and gardens for passers-by to play with. People are encouraged to engage with the cells and each other, collaborating with strangers in connecting the cells as building blocks to gradually form an amorphous, organic structure.

The project stimulates community engagement while fostering a sense of constructive nurturing, as groups work together to cultivate and “grow” a Bloom garden. The resulting structure is alien in contrast with its staid surroundings, and as such serves as a thought provoking, living sculpture.

Alisa Andrasek has a background in experimental architecture, and her work explores the possibilities of computational geometry and its potential on design. She founded Biothing in 2001, a cross-disciplinary design lab. Andrasek is a guest lecturer at the RMIT Design Hub on Friday 29th August from 6pm – 8pm.
