The Unicorn unveils its new look

Following prior incarnations, such as Fringe Bar and Unicorn Cellar, the Unicorn Hotel on Oxford Street in the inner Sydney suburb of Paddington has now found a new look and a whole new character. And it’s all thanks to a bottle of Veuve Clicquot…

unicorn-3-ADRIt was while enjoying a bottle of the premium champagne that creative director Nathan Sullivan found his inspiration for the colour palette of the Unicorn’s fitout. “I just looked at it and had the idea: yellow, black and white,” says Sullivan.

unicorn-4-ADRTo realise the project, he collaborated with BSeated Global, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of commercial furniture, which custom-made all the furniture to Sullivan’s specific requirements.

“The major reason I chose this furniture was I wanted to have something that no one else had,” says Sullivan. “I wanted our interior to be different to all the other venues around us. People should walk into the Unicorn and say, ‘Oh wow, that’s a nice chair, I’ve never seen one like that before’.”

To this end, BSeated Global provided leather ottomans, long leather seating rows, leather lounges, café chairs and leather wing chairs – all in the bar/restaurant’s signature colours of black, white and yellow.

BSeated Global’s Daniella Klein Menachemson nominates these, along with the double-size wing back chairs and pale yellow oval ottomans, as the standout features.

The brief for the fitout was “to create a pub environment where women can go without being judged on what they look like or wear… a place where they can relax, eat divine food, drink good cocktails and enjoy their time”.
