What if door handles weren’t just functional objects, but sculptural moments within a space? What if a cupboard pull could echo the architectural language of an entire interior? For Bankston, these are not abstract questions but the foundation of their latest collaboration with Sans-Arc Studio – an expansion of the award-winning Super Collection that challenges the very notion of what hardware can be.
The collection is a melange of exaggerated forms, a playground of geometric shapes and a cheeky rebellion against the rigid, restrained and expected. It is hardware reimagined as design statements – elements that do more than complement a space but actively shape its character. Working with Sans-Arc Studio director Matiya Marovich, Bankston has taken its commitment to innovation one step further, crafting four new pieces for their Super Collection that blur the boundaries between artistry and engineering.
No stranger to subverting expectations in his work, Marovich’s whimsical yet highly functional Pink Moon Saloon transforms urban space into an immersive design experience. That same spirit of playfulness underpins the Super Collection’s new arrivals.
The Futurismo DDA Lever is one example of Marovich’s design whimsy. It’s not just a door handle – it’s a geometric exclamation point to his design idiolect that simultaneously meets the stringent accessibility requirements of the Australian Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Then, there’s the Futurismo Pull, a statement piece that extends the collection’s reach into larger-scale projects. Bold, precise and sculptural, it commands attention without feeling ostentatious.
Perhaps the most playful additions to the range are the Zzzigurat Cupboard Knob and Zzzigurat Cabinet Pull. Their stepped geometry introduces a rhythm that transitions effortlessly from doors to joinery, creating a visual conversation across a space. Small in scale but big in personality, these creations bring cohesion to an interior.
As with all Bankston collections, materiality plays a starring role. The new designs are available in six finishes – Brushed Champagne, Champagne PVD, Nero, Neutralis, Polished Chrome and Smooth Nickel – each carefully selected for its ability to stand alone or integrate within a broader palette. The Futurismo DDA Lever even allows for interchangeable roses and backplates, giving designers the freedom to customise configurations to suit their vision.
For Bankston, this collection is not just about aesthetics but about pushing boundaries in both form and function. “We are thrilled to introduce these new pieces alongside Matiya Marovich and the Sans-Arc Studio team,” Bankston co-CEO Emily Bradley says. “Their ability to blend traditional forms with contemporary materials and detailing particularly captured our attention. Merging expressive, bold design with practical functionality resonates deeply with our philosophy of creating products that are both visually captivating and highly functional.”
Marovich mirrors this sentiment. “Renowned for their commitment to producing enduring, high-quality products, Bankston helped to ensure our designs not only captured the essence of artistry but also adhered to the demands of real-world use,” he says. “Through an unwavering focus on precision engineering and premium finishes, Bankston truly elevated the functionality of our designs without compromising on their visual impact.”
There’s something almost subversive about treating hardware with this level of intention. It’s a category that, for the most part, has been relegated to the background, existing purely to serve a function. Bankston and Sans-Arc Studio refuse to accept that. Instead, they offer an alternative: hardware as a design language in itself, as an artistic medium, as a way to infuse personality into the everyday.
With the Super Collection’s latest evolution, they have turned what is often overlooked into something impossible to ignore. In doing so, they remind us that great design isn’t just about what we see; it’s also about what we touch, what we interact with and what leaves a lasting impression long after we’ve walked through the door.
