US design firm Knoll and furniture company Herman Miller have come together to “redefine modern design under the new name MillerKnoll.

The rebrand comes just days after Herman Miller completed its acquisition of Knoll, founded in New York in 1938.

The company, which has worked with architects like Sir David Adjaye, Frank Gehry and Tobia Scarpa in the past, manufactures office systems, seating, files and storage, tables and desks, textiles and accessories for the office, home and higher education settings.

Moving forward, the combined MillerKnoll will maintain its legacy brands, Herman Miller and Knoll, along with a “united portfolio” of complementary brands.

These are set to include Colebrook Bosson Saunders, DatesWeiser, DWR, Edelman Leather, FilzFelt, Fully, Geiger, HAY, Holly Hunt, KnollExtra, Knoll Office, KnollStudio, KnollTextiles, Maars Living Walls, Maharam, Muuto, naughtone and Spinneybeck.

In addition, MillerKnoll will have a new operating model that will ensure strong brand ownership, transforming the industry and “redefining modern design”, while also better engaging with architects and interior designers.

“We are excited to introduce MillerKnoll, a collective of dynamic brands coming together to design the world we live in,” says president Andi Owen.

“Design is the way we imagine and shape a better future. In coming together, we will define and lead this transformation, like we have other transformations in our history.”

Herman Miller is a sponsor of IDEA 2021 and recently celebrated the 65th anniversary of its iconic Eames Chair, releasing a new white oak veneer and cream Flamiber version, pictured above, to mark the occasion.

The US furniture company also teamed up with 19 other brands earlier this month to launch Diversity in Design – an organisation geared towards growing the representation of Black creatives.

We’ll be announcing the shortlisted projects for IDEA 2021 on 9 September 2021! Keep an eye on the IDEA website to see if your project was shortlisted.
