Fender Katsalidis, the award-winning design firm behind iconic projects like Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) and Sydney’s Central Place, has been selected by Deicorp, a leading developer, to spearhead the design of an impressive $310 million mixed-use tower in Rhodes, Sydney’s Inner West.

The selection was made after an intense Design Excellence Competition, with Fender Katsalidis emerging as the clear winner.

The jury, in their selection of Fender Katsalidis’ design, commended the firm for their elegant and thoughtful approach. They highlighted the harmonious internal apartment planning, the rhythmic tripartite facade, the striking tower form, and the meticulous attention to detail in creating a podium with a central courtyard for ample natural light and ventilation.

Furthermore, they praised the provision of a public plaza at the southern entrance, the careful optimisation of retail frontages, and the creation of a pedestrian refuge between the site’s vehicular access and the neighbouring property to the north. These elements collectively contribute to the exceptional design of the Rhodes tower, according to the judges, setting it apart as an architectural gem in the Inner West.

The visionary design for the Rhodes tower encompasses 213 apartments, a three-storey basement, and a generous 3782 square metres of retail and commercial space. This landmark project further enriches Deicorp’s already robust portfolio in the area, which includes highly anticipated developments like Melrose Central in Melrose Park and the Cosmopolitan in Parramatta.

Positioned strategically on the corner of Marquet and Mary Streets, this 32-level tower offers seamless pedestrian access to the bustling Rhodes Central retail precinct and the convenient Rhodes train station. This reflects Deicorp’s commitment to creating well-connected communities that prioritise accessibility and convenience.

Fender Katsalidis director Craig Baudin understands the significance of this project in providing essential and high-quality housing to Sydney’s Inner West.

“As net overseas migration is projected to reach nearly 1.5 million people over the next five years, there is a pressing need for new homes to meet the demands of an expanding population,” Baudin explains.

“Situated in an ideal location with excellent transport infrastructure and nearby retail amenities, Deicorp’s Rhodes project offers a unique opportunity to address this demand. Leveraging our expertise in mixed-use placemaking and the creation of exceptional apartment living, we are well-positioned to deliver a design that will not only enhance the lives of its residents but also provide much-needed housing for Sydney.”

Fueled by admiration for Fender Katsalidis’ creative prowess Deicorp chair Fouad Deiri  warmly embraces the jury’s decision. The firm’s winning entry perfectly aligns with Deicorp’s values of strong design and exceptional amenities.

“Our company values strong design and exceptional amenities, and Fender Katsalidis’ winning entry exemplifies both,” Deiri affirms.

“We are thrilled to bring this extraordinary building to Rhodes and create more than 200 new homes for residents to cherish and enjoy.”
