John Wardle Architects (JWA) has been commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria to design an innovative outdoor structure, or the NGV Tent,  in a new selection process that has been dubbed the Commission for Ephemeral Architecture.

Following on from the success of last year’s MPavilion in Melbourne and continuing the form of the internationally acclaimed Serpentine Pavilion commission in London, the resulting NGV Tent will open in September 2015, with JWA’s installation I Dips Me Lid to be situated in the NGV Garden as a place for events and activities.  

In honour of a CJ Dennis poem entitled I Dips Me Lid, which commemorated the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, JWA appropriated this sentiment for their installation’s inspiration: the Sydney Myer Music Bowl.

JWA’s installation will follow a parametric design principle and will utilise a simplistic timber structure, with pink cloth folds connecting the timber supports into a singular space.

Ephemeral Architecture commissions will be selected via an open call for submissions in the middle of each year, with winners being either Australian firms and designers or international practices working in collaboration with local partners.
