Western architects, print makers and ceramic artists, have sought inspiration and incorporated techniques from the Japanese tradition since the late nineteenth century; often they are drawn by the organic simplicity and versatility of Japanese design.

To be opened on 8 May by the NSW government architect, Peter Poulet, Japan: Australian Perspectives is an exhibition displaying the works of seven contemporary Australian creative practitioners who have been inspired by Japan, each demonstrating their response to the influence that the culture has had on their own creative practice.

The practitioners selected for this exhibition include:

Tony Coote, an accomplished NSW based architect, builder and member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

Diane Jones, Executive Director of award wining architecture firm PTW Architects, who has extensive experience working with multi-user clients including local councils and Government departments.

Keith Pike, architect and urban designer, who has worked both locally and internationally on a broad range of projects. – Successful Photographers Adrian Boddy and Tony Caro

Ro Cook, textile designer and owner of Rokoco textiles

Ayako Saito, accomplished sculptor and painter whose work can be viewed locally and internationally.

Japan: Australian Perspectives promises to be a stimulating look at the important and constantly refreshing relationship between an old culture and a new.
