Bathe’s South Melbourne showroom was abuzz with exemplary German design at their recent Oktoberfest-themed launch for Kaldewei’s Soundwave bath system. Pretzels and bratwurst were among the canapes ably served by lederhosen-clad waitstaff on the night, an apt celebration of the German craftsmanship on show.

Kaldewei’s Soundwave bath system brings the age-old daily ritual of bathing well into the 21st century, with the exciting addition of a wireless sound system. The Bluetooth sound technology is concealed beneath the bath, turning it into a speaker with or without water and allowing the user to connect to music stored on their laptop, phone or mp3 device. The controls are a streamlined touch screen interface, seamlessly integrating with any Kaldewei bath.

Incorporating music to the bathing experience is an intriguing prospect promising to heighten the sensory pleasure of the daily soak, posing the question – what is the perfect soundtrack to a bath? Whether your musical tastes sway to Bach and Beethoven, or you have a soft spot for industrial Kraftwerk, it’s something to contemplate while you scrub away the day.

Also on show was a Hansgrohe collaboration with the iconic Japanese designers at Nendo Studio, the Axor showerhead. The quirky approach to the design is a complete reimagining of the shower experience, using precise German engineering to realise the Nendo vision. Hansgrohe’s dedicated team of spray specialists are expert hydraulics engineers, solely employed to create spray patterns that maximise in-shower comfort.

Of the complexity in the Axor showerhead’s design, Oki Sato, founder of Nendo commented, “It would have been so simple if we had arranged the light around the water. However, we did exactly the opposite.” The water in the showerhead is tracked to the jet disc by the thin tubes acting as lampshade, in a feat of hydraulic engineering which preserves the integrity of the design statement.
