Entries are now open for the 2014 Electrolux Design Lab competition. Now in its 12th year, the design competition is open to Australian students, who will vie for a six-month paid internship and prize money of €500 by submitting innovative design ideas for futuristic homes.

According to the ‘Thinking Ahead’ report published by Electrolux, by 2050 an estimated 67 percent of the world’s population will be living in urban areas, which is bound to cause a worldwide resource constraint.

Lyndon Craig, Electrolux senior design manager Asia Pacific, explains: “Homes become more important as the challenges in the urban environment grow; as a result we want our homes to be the centre of relaxation and peace of mind.

“Design Lab is one way for Electrolux to build a culture of innovation. We’re looking forward to receiving creative ideas that promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles within the theme of Creating Healthy Homes.”

This year’s competition theme is the aforementioned ‘Creating Healthy Homes’ and all entrants will have to submit ideas that will help resolve problems that society will face in the future. The ideas can range from products to accessories, consumables and services under three categories: Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification.

The submission deadline is Sunday 6 April.
