Following a highly successful preview of the Billo armchair at Melbourne Design Week in May 2024, Nau proudly unveils the Billo sofa system. This groundbreaking addition to the Nau range redefines the standards of comfort, versatility and visual appeal.
The Billo sofa system represents a creative collaboration designed to deliver an exceptionally comfortable modular collection with a relaxed, inviting aesthetic – distinct from any of Nau’s offerings, past or present.
Drawing inspiration from classic Italian sofas, the Billo system merges ageless elegance with contemporary versatility, making it a stalwart addition to its lineup and establishing a new standard in comfort and adaptability.
Cult founder and managing director Richard Munao says the aim for the Billo system was to craft a sofa that “radiates a relaxed, approachable vibe” while providing “unparalleled comfort and modularity”. “We sought to create something unique within the Nau collection that offers an exceptional seating experience,” Munao says.
Distinguished by its plush form and integrated bolster, the Billo system provides ‘cloud nine’ comfort that evokes feelings of a warm hug. Its modular design allows for an abundance of configurations, with each piece able to function independently or as part of larger arrangements to fit diverse spaces.
Designer Adam Goodrum, the artisan behind the collection says the design journey involved extensive sketching, CAD development and multiple prototype iterations to perfect the appearance, tailoring and comfort. “We began with the armchair, the most intricate piece, using its design to guide the other modules for a cohesive and versatile collection. The corner module was developed last to ensure cohesion across the collection,” Goodrum says.
With a nod to a ‘billowy’ tactile experience, the collection’s moniker encapsulates its ethereal form with relaxed tailoring that underscores its allure. Each meticulously crafted module enhances both comfort and functionality, which Goodrum puts down to its intuitive design and easy reconfiguration. This versatility renders it ideal for residential and commercial settings, offering a convivial aesthetic that enriches every space it inhabits.
Choosing the right materials and finishes for the collection required close collaboration between Adam Goodrum, the product development team and the manufacturer. Together, they refined the frame construction and experimented with different foam densities to find the perfect balance of softness and durability. This meticulous process resulted in the most complex sofa Nau has ever designed, reflecting their commitment to quality and innovation.”
Further to the design firm’s leanings toward innovation is its deep value of sustainability. For the Billo sofa system, Nau focused on the use of responsibly sourced materials to ensure product durability that would extend its lifespan. This approach minimises environmental impact and promotes responsible consumption.
Renowned for his knack for blending creativity with practicality, Goodrum has once again flexed his creative muscles with the Billo collection, designing pieces that are not only visually captivating but also remarkably comfortable. His design philosophy is rooted in the conviction that furniture should enrich our living experience. With the Billo collection, he has developed a sofa system that provides both relaxation and versatility, making it well-suited for any setting.
A staunch purveyor of responsible design and the use of ethically sourced materials, Goodrum’s pride in the new system is infectious. “This has been the most challenging project I’ve worked on at Nau, but I’m thrilled with the outcome,” he says. “The Billo sofa not only enhances the visual appeal of a space but also offers user-friendly functionality and exceptional comfort. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I do – I even want one for my own home!”
The Billo sofa system is now available for purchase and can be experienced in all Cult showrooms.
