Recognised as one of Australia’s leading designers specialising in red carpet and bridal gowns, Steven Khalil is meeting the demands of his legions of fans by lending his creative aesthetic to a new medium – rugs.
Riding a 30-year wave of excellence and recognition in bridal, ready-to-wear, red-carpet and special occasion couture, Khalil is taking his talent to luxury home interiors. In a partnership with Designer Rugs, the Steven Khalil Interieur line marks his first release in the interior design category with three eclectic rugs influenced by some of his most intricately detailed red-carpet gowns.
One of the new designs, the De Miel, is a hand tufted and semi-worsted New Zealand wool blended with bamboo silk. With a dynamic honeycomb pattern akin to the designer’s runway designs, Khalil makes an arresting statement via the De Miel.
“I wanted all the rugs to have an intricacy that shows the detail of the runway gowns and I knew this design would work beautifully as a rug,” Khalil says. “The pearls and sequins of that design embody all of those elements in one wearable piece. The texture and the dimension in that gown was the starting point. It’s so dynamic.”
The drama of a Khalil-designed Academy Awards gown translates as his second floor rug, La Nuit – French for ‘the night’. Donning bold and asymmetrical shapes that add texture and mood to a setting, this floor covering features hand-carved detailing that radiates luxury decor. “The gown that corresponds with this design had similar qualities,” Khalil explains. “It was beaded in a different colour and pattern, but I knew this would connect well as a rug design without being repetitive.”
And what Khalil rug selection would be complete without inspiration from some of his most impressive bridal gowns? The Perles rug pays homage to the gentle femininity and soft colour palette of some of the designer’s most breathtaking couture gowns. Combined with intricately varied pile heights, the Perles creates a serene atmosphere with a touch of class.
Khalil says there is a lovely softness to this design.
“The round beaded leaves and the elegance of the pearls are a reference to a piece of bridal beading we had worked on. Soft pink and mauve hues slightly move it away from bridal, making it still feminine and beautiful but more relatable to home and interiors,” Khalil says.
By working in collaboration with leading Australian artists and designers, Designer Rugs continually strive to innovate with barrier-breaking design. In their collaboration with Steven Khalil, they recognised a mutual appreciation for finely crafted workmanship matched with aesthetic appeal and unique design.
This partnership is a reflection of 50 years of combined experience in high couture, interior perfection and stunning floor coverings that survive the passage of time.
