International design practice Hassell has joined a global community of more than 9000 purpose-driven businesses as a Certified B Corporation, underscoring its dedication to creating places people love and making a meaningful difference in the world. The milestone reflects Hassell’s ongoing commitment to designing with purpose and balancing social, environmental, and economic values.
B Corporations represent a global movement of companies redefining the role of business in society. These organisations commit to high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency — measuring success not only by profit but by the positive impact they create for people, communities and the planet.
For Hassell, becoming B Corp certified is a significant step in a much larger journey.
“As designers, we have a responsibility to create places where both people and nature can thrive,” managing director Liz Westgarth says. “To fulfil our purpose, we must collaborate with other like-minded organisations that share our vision for tackling our industry’s most pressing social and environmental challenges. Joining the B Corp community allows us to do just that — making us accountable to high social and environmental performance standards.”
The certification follows a rigorous assessment process conducted by B Lab, which reviewed everything from Hassell’s internal business operations to the impact of its international portfolio of projects. The independent validation not only holds the practice accountable but ensures it remains aligned with its long-term goals.
Becoming a B Corp is not the start of Hassell’s commitment to positive impact — it’s another milestone in an ongoing effort. The practice has already made clear commitments to regenerative design, climate action, First Nations reconciliation, gender equity, tackling modern slavery and sustainable procurement.
Hassell’s portfolio reflects these values, with projects such as the Central Green Forest Park in Beijing, WA Museum Boola Bardip, and the Resilient South City initiative in San Francisco, all demonstrating its approach to sustainability and community impact.
Hassell’s certification also strengthens its commitment to fostering future talent as a practice partner of Australian Design Review’s 30UNDER30 program. This initiative celebrates and supports emerging designers by providing mentorship and connections with industry leaders. By aligning its values with 30UNDER30, Hassell underscores its dedication to shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for the design industry.
