Putting the human in Humanscale

Share

Long before it became fashionable, Humanscale began designing and selling ergonomic products around the globe. Its first showroom in Australia continues that legacy.

Founded over 40 years ago in New York, where it remains headquartered, Humanscale has decades of experience in assisting people in rethinking how they use their workstations.

Australia has had access to Humanscale’s large suite of ergonomic products for some time, but with the opening of the company’s first ever showroom in the Royal Exchange Assurance Building on Pitt Street, Sydney, local users are able to check out those pieces in person and gain a clearer vision of their benefits and applications before purchase.

The showroom is a significant milestone for Humanscale and evidence of the company’s continued growth, dedication to cementing its Australian footprint and intention to widen its presence in the APAC region. The Pitt Street location means Humanscale is particularly well placed. Right in the centre of the city’s design and business district, its neighbours comprise a bevy of leading architecture studios, interior design practices, commercial clients and creative professionals.

Designed in collaboration with renowned practice Suchi Reddy of Reddymade New York, and in partnership with Tribe Studio Australia, the showroom juxtaposes architectural heritage with contemporary design.

“The Royal Exchange Assurance Building offered a powerful starting point for the design – its modernist clarity, light-filled façade and belief in progress align beautifully with Humanscale’s commitment to human wellbeing,” Suchi Reddy, founder of Reddymade Architecture says.

“Our goal was to create a space where the architecture and the products work together to show how the environment can support the body, the mind and the rhythms of daily work. Working closely with Humanscale and with Hannah Tribe as the local architect of record, we sought to create a showroom that feels both timeless and responsive to its context in Sydney.”

Naturally the showroom presents a comprehensive selection of Humanscale’s ergonomic solutions, including task and conference seating such as the Freedom, World, Liberty, Summa and Path chairs, alongside fully realised workstation settings that demonstrate a holistic approach to workplace performance.

Also on display are monitor arms, height-adjustable tables, task lighting, docking stations and integrated accessories. Textile applications, occasional seating and collaborative zones are featured in the environment too, while quieter areas provide spaces for focused work and private conversations. Cognisant of Humanscale’s values, sustainability is another key focus of the showroom space – taken into account during material choices, product design and selection.

Humanscale’s managing director Australia and New Zealand, Mark Nolan is delighted with the location. “This is a major moment for Humanscale,” he says. “Opening our first Sydney showroom allows us to better serve the Australian market while providing a physical space that truly embodies our philosophy. Sydney is a global city with a strong design culture, and housing our showroom within a building of such architectural significance makes this opening even more meaningful.

“Having a permanent presence in Sydney allows us to engage more deeply with the local design community and demonstrate first-hand how ergonomics, sustainability and intelligent design can transform the way people work.”
