A message from us about the 2021 IDEA gala

In many ways, 2021 feels like a repeat of 2020. So many of the challenges we as creatives and designers faced in 2020 have reared their ugly head in 2021.

As the organisers behind Australia’s first independent architecture and interior design award, we are in the unenviable position of trying to bring together a program during a pandemic many of us were so sure was in the rear-view mirror.

As plans change, schedules shift and snap lockdowns throw everything to the wind, there is one thing that keeps us motivated and that’s the projects that have been entered into what is our 19th year. Cheesy we know, but then, the sincerest felt truths often are.

A huge part of the IDEA program is our annual gala. The evening is an opportunity for architects and designers to come together to celebrate their peers, to network, catch up, connect, collaborate and just unwind.

It’s also a really important way for us, as editors and publishers, and for our sponsors, to give back to the industry, say thank you and honour all the shortlisted, highly commended and winning projects in the best way possible.

Last year, we made the decision to postpone our annual gala until we could come together safely and securely in person.

After weeks of discussions, we have decided to do the same in 2021.

Our gala was originally scheduled for Sydney at the end of November. While NSW – like all Australian states – is smashing its vaccine targets in the hopes of ending lockdown early, we recognise that many interstate borders won’t reopen before the end of the year.

IDEA is much more than just a platform for the country’s biggest and most established practices in its biggest and most populated cities.

For 19 years, it has recognised excellence in architecture and interior design Australia wide, celebrating, connecting and promoting studios and practices both big and small, in our capital cities and in our rural and regional areas.

With that in mind, we have made the decision to move this year’s gala to either 18 or 25 February 2022 in Sydney, so that everyone can attend, regardless of what state, city or town they call home.

We’re also incredibly fortunate to have the full support of our amazing sponsors in this decision. We are proud to be associated with the very best retailers, manufacturers and associated industries. Their support encourages the Australian design professional and applauds its triumphs.

In the coming weeks, we’ll have more details about the gala, so be sure to stay tuned and save both the 18 and 25 of February 2022 in your diaries!
