Designer Selects — Baya’s Hannah Middleton on pieces for an everlasting summer

Share

Baya creative director Hannah Middleton is one of those rare creative individuals who knows how to balance creative design with practical commercialism. Her work for New Zealand soft furnishing company, Baya, gives her the scope to explore innovative design solutions and explore the almost limitless possibilities that arise when tactility, materiality, colour and narratives of place come together.

For our Designer Selects series, Middleton shares her personal favourites from Baya’s summer collection, along with pieces that express summer entertaining in the land Down Under.

The Scout cushion in mangrove

The Scout outdoor cushion in mangrove-coloured geometric design. Available from Baya.

Outdoor cushions play a crucial role in enhancing both the comfort and style of your exterior spaces. They not only provide support for lounging and relaxation but also serve as key decorative elements that can transform a patio, garden or balcony into a vibrant oasis.

One of my favourite new outdoor cushions is the Scout, woven from 100 percent recycled PET – essentially plastic bottles. This eco-friendly approach not only showcases a commitment to sustainability but also ensures durability in outdoor environments. The graphic offset line work of the pattern is particularly striking, adding a punchy visual element that elevates the overall aesthetic of any outdoor setting.

Bilia Glass Tumblers

Bilia glass tumblers, available from Case e Cucina.

These were a self-gift after a small career milestone and they often find themselves filled with my favourite homemade cocktails. Where possible, the marble colour should match the drink.

The Sunset cushion

Baya’s Sunset cushion.

The Sunset cushion features one of my hand-painted designs. The print showcases soft brushstrokes that evoke the serene essence of the ocean. The cotton-linen base enhances its calming palette of slate and off-white tones, allowing the subtle design to transform any space into an elegant and tranquil retreat. It’s a piece that invites a sense of peace and beauty into your home.

Abel Scene 01 Room Spray

Abel room spray, available from Abel.

I discovered this scent on a visit to my favourite sauna, Hana in Auckland’s Grey Lynn. It immediately felt like Baya – fresh, clean, minimalist while still being vibrant. I’m campaigning to make this the signature scent for our to-be-opened showroom in Richmond, Melbourne.

Lonsdale outdoor rug in cumin

Baya’s Lonsdale rug in cumin. Available from Baya.

The Lonsdale outdoor rug is an excellent choice for enhancing contemporary exterior spaces. Tightly woven from durable PET fibres, its flatweave design not only ensures longevity but also adds a refined texture to outdoor areas. The subtle colourways create a versatile foundation, allowing you to style your patio or garden effortlessly. This rug harmonises beautifully with various furniture styles, making it ideal for creating inviting and stylish outdoor retreats. Whether you’re entertaining guests or simply enjoying a quiet moment outside, the Lonsdale rug elevates the aesthetic while providing comfort underfoot.

Baina Towel

Baina Willis beach towel in sand and noir. Available from Baina.

I have huge respect for Baina, a fellow New Zealand-based brand that is finding relevance globally. Their use of patterns gives them a distinctiveness that I love, and the quality’s great too.
