The 16th annual ArchiTeam Awards, a prestigious event in Australia’s architectural calendar, concluded with the announcement of the winners on Thursday 16 November at the No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne.
Showcasing an array of remarkable entries, this year’s awards underscored the industry’s commitment to flexibility, sustainability and designing for multi-generational families.
The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Queenscliff Recreation Reserve Amenities by Stonehouse + Irons Architecture. This project not only clinched the coveted ArchiTeam Medal but also the Commercial, Community & Public Award.
Judges lauded the design for transcending the conventional “nice toilet block”, praising its robust detailing, materiality and meticulous attention to context, light, ventilation and overall experience.
The amenities block, described as more than a facility, embraces simple holiday joys, offering outdoor shower facilities with an extraordinary view and public seating for moments of respite.
In the Residential Alterations and Additions category, three standout projects were recognised.
Sonelo Architect’s Garden Wall house, winner in the ‘under $500k’ subcategory, impressed the judges with its meticulous planning, providing residents with adaptable options to meet evolving family needs.
The Quarry house by Winwood Mckenzie secured the $500,000 to $1 million subcategory, celebrated for its delightful unpretentiousness and consummate practicality.
The over $1 million subcategory saw Fitzroy Laneway house by Andrew Child Architect receive accolades for its finely crafted and contextually sensitive addition, breathing new life into Victorian terrace typology.
The Residential New category, split into ‘up to 1Mil’ and ‘1Mil+’ subcategories, saw Envirotecture’s Huff’n’Puff Haus taking the crown in the $1Mil+ subcategory. This ethically responsible dwelling, recognised for its resilience and future-proof design, also clinched the ArchiTeam Sustainability Medal.
