A timeless bathroom collection made for life

Designed by Swiss designer Peter Wirz of Studio Vetica, LAUFEN MEDA brings together refined geometry, soft forms and considered functionality in a complete bathroom collection designed to adapt to changing needs and interiors.

In a bathroom, longevity is as much a question of design as it is of durability. The most successful spaces balance immediate visual appeal with the practical demands of everyday life, creating environments that remain relevant well beyond the moment of installation. For Swiss bathroom brand LAUFEN, this philosophy underpins MEDA, a comprehensive collection developed in collaboration with designer Peter Wirz of Studio Vetica.

Defined by the claim ‘Made for Life’, MEDA brings together ceramics and furniture in a cohesive system that prioritises timeless aesthetics, versatility and functionality. Its design language moves between clean, rigorous lines and softer, more organic forms, establishing a balance that is equally suited to private residences and premium hospitality environments.

The collection builds on a relationship between Wirz and LAUFEN that spans more than two decades. This longstanding collaboration has given the designer an intimate understanding of the brand’s identity, manufacturing capabilities and approach to innovation. Previous projects, including the comprehensive PRO program, have demonstrated the value of this shared knowledge.

With MEDA, the challenge was to establish a new design language for the bathroom while maintaining the qualities that have defined the partnership. Working alongside the multidisciplinary team at Studio Vetica, Wirz approached the brief by considering the bathroom as an integrated environment rather than a collection of individual products.

The result is a coordinated system built around essential forms and extensive modularity, allowing the collection to respond to different spatial configurations, architectural contexts and personal preferences.

‘The personality of LAUFEN and its products reflect a symbiosis of world class design, innovation and functionality,’ says Wirz. ‘Our aim was to create a new line for everyone, for every home, with the highest quality and timeless design that works, whether it takes centre stage or acts as a reliable friend in the background.’

Designing for longevity

At the heart of MEDA is the idea that timeless design offers more than aesthetic endurance. It also represents a more considered approach to consumption, material selection and the long-term value of a product.

“A design that is as timeless as possible paired with innovative technology and materials is essential,” Wirz explains. “For customers, this means looking to the future with a good feeling.”

This philosophy aligns with LAUFEN’s broader commitment to sustainability, which encompasses material innovation, careful production processes and the development of products intended to serve users over time. By combining quality construction with a restrained visual language, MEDA seeks to reduce the reliance on fleeting stylistic trends.

The collection’s softer aesthetic also responds to a broader desire for calm within the home. As bathrooms increasingly function as spaces for retreat and restoration, their materiality, proportions and tactile qualities become central to the experience.

“The calm, soft and gentle design language of the new product line is the basis for the extended LAUFEN brand experience,” says Wirz. “People are looking for peace and security in a hectic world. The new design concept takes up this desire.”

Rather than relying on a single defining gesture, MEDA establishes its identity through the relationship between contrasting geometries, carefully considered proportions and a consistent approach to detail.

A study in contrasting forms

The washbasins illustrate this design approach particularly clearly. Their exterior profiles are squared and precise, while the interiors introduce generous basins with rounded corners and a more fluid character. The contrast gives each piece a distinctive presence without compromising its visual restraint.

A mathematical logic informs the range of shapes and sizes, creating consistency across the collection. Selected configurations incorporate asymmetrical forms, providing additional surface area for everyday use while maintaining a sense of lightness.

Material and colour options extend this versatility. The ceramic washbasins are available in glossy or matt white, as well as matt graphite and matt black. These finishes allow designers to establish different moods, from a bright, understated bathroom to a darker, more tactile interior.

The bathtub continues the emphasis on material experience. Manufactured in Marbond, a composite material with a velvety surface, it combines a slim silhouette with a choice of configurations. Options include freestanding, wall-mounted and right- or left-corner installations, giving the design flexibility across a range of bathroom layouts.

The freestanding version can also be specified in a two-tone finish, pairing a matt grey exterior with a bright white interior. This combination coordinates with the collection’s darker ceramic finishes and matching furniture colours, reinforcing the sense of a unified bathroom environment.

Function integrated into form

MEDA’s commitment to considered design extends to the technical performance of its sanitaryware. The collection’s toilet is rimless and features LAUFEN’s new Silent Flush technology, an innovation designed to improve both flushing performance and acoustic comfort.

The vortex flushing system directs water through the interior of the bowl with force while operating at an exceptionally low noise level. This makes the technology particularly relevant to residential settings where bathrooms adjoin bedrooms, as well as hotels and other hospitality environments with demanding acoustic requirements.

The toilet’s geometry echoes the washbasins, with corresponding corner radii and a body that tapers gently towards the base. The result is a form that appears discreet within the room while maintaining a clear relationship with the broader collection.

Across MEDA, the emphasis is on making functionality feel inherent to the design. Modularity accommodates different spatial needs; material and colour options support individual expression; and technical innovation addresses the practical realities of daily use. Ultimately, MEDA proposes a bathroom collection in which longevity is not treated as a compromise between aesthetics and performance. Instead, the two are understood as interdependent. Through the collaboration between LAUFEN and Studio Vetica, the collection offers a measured approach to contemporary bathroom design – one grounded in precision, adaptability and the enduring value of considered form.
