One of the world’s best known design brands, Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH has found a new home at Space.
Gebrüder Thonet originated in 1853 after Michael Thonet moved from Germany to Austria where he founded the company with his five sons after he was invited to create a patented product by a well known chancellor. It was here that Thonet abandoned the traditional and common practice of glued lamellar wood and worked with the industrial chemical – mechanical steam bent process. This meant his elegant and practical designs could be produced at a larger scale.
By 1911, the Gebrüder Thonet collection was made of 980 different models and had made more than 50 million of their famous No. 14 chair between 1850 and 1930 alone. By the end of the second world war, the company had independent production plants in various countries which then developed into separate businesses. It was in 1976 that the Austrian company changed its name to its current Gebrüder Thonet Vienna incarnation.
Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH has always prided themselves on working with the most important designers of the era and most recently have had products designed wunderkinds like Front and GamFratesi.
Always truly original, the company has stayed true to their roots of producing and manufacturing high quality design that excites and attracts a loyal following. Their collection showcases a true evolution of our design history.
The collection is now available exclusively at Space in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
