With an esteemed 13-year history, IDEA has steadily built a reputation as the premier design awards event in Australia. The almost year-long process of calling for entries, judging and shortlist reveal all comes together for the Gala Party, a grand affair where peers, friends and colleagues can celebrate.

inside co-editor Jan Henderson expresses that this year garnered the most entries to date. As such, the judge’s role was challenging, with outstanding projects seen in every single field.

One of the categories with an exceptional number of standout projects was the Multi-Residential category. It saw a higher number of entries than previous years, with a clear focus on form and function. Multi-Residential projects have really raised the bar, and Henderson believes this is a reflection of the shift in housing requirements as architects and designers are being called upon to make the most out of smaller spaces. These projects are now demanding more attention to detail and a higher level of sophistication, which is abundantly evident among the shortlisted projects seen this year.

The judging day process is long and stressful, Henderson says, but the seven members of the jury were nothing but professional. Each coming with particular expertise across a range of areas, they were able to use their professionalism and range of knowledge throughout the tough process.

The upcoming Gala Party is set to be a culmination of the industry’s best and brightest. The event will not only feature the best in design but also three different musical acts including the string trio, Accent Strings. Taking place at the Dockside Pavilion with a location over the water and harbour views, it’s set to be a grand affair.
