The graphic design duo Michael Lugmayr and Eva Dijkstra behind the multidisciplinary agency Design by Toko chat with ADR about all things design.

Origin story

We both studied at the St. Joost Academy of Art in The Netherlands, where we developed a passion for everything design. We worked at several agencies before starting our own adventure in Rotterdam in 2001. Five years later, we decided to continue our (geo)graphic adventure in beautiful Sydney and now work with architects, designers and other companies on both continents.

One project

Eva recently used her art practice to raise funds for Ukraine and created a unique artwork. The piece was auctioned and the proceeds were donated to charity.

Secret to winning over fellow creatives

We’ve never met a creative without a strong opinion! We seek the unexpected, find playfulness in serious matters, challenge preconceived notions and are extremely curious. By doing so we present unexpected outcomes and ideas.

Muses?

Everything Zero, especially Otto Piene, but also people like Max Bill or Karl Gerstner.

Michael was born in Krefeld where Ludwig Mies van der Rohe made his mark.

Le Corbusier or the Belgium masters Vincent Van Duysen and Nicolas Schuybroek.

Dream collaboration

Mallorca-based Huguet – its craftsmanship, history and eye for design is inspirational.

Top tip

Have a vision and stand by it. It’s easy to get distracted and lose sight of your objectives and creative motivations, especially in today’s rapid image culture. And gain valuable insights into running a business. Being creative is the easy part.
