LIXIL, the maker of pioneering water and housing products, has announced the Grand Prize winners of the American Standard Design Award (ASDA) Asia Pacific 2022.
Organised by the American Standard for students in the APAC region, the competition aims to bring the design community together to develop purposeful functions inspired by the next generation of designers.
This year, the ASDA received an overwhelming response from over 2800 registrations hailing from seven countries in the APAC region, namely Australia, Cambodia, India, Phillippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
At the heart of the ASDA is the objective of embracing thoughtful design to enhance hygiene standards while providing solutions to the ever-changing needs of consumers. With this in mind, the theme of this year’s competition is Purposeful Design – Transforming the Way We Live.
Reflecting the resurgence of urbanisation and an increased emphasis on health and wellbeing, the ASDA is structured into two categories – Residential Bathroom Space Design and Hospitality Bathroom Space Design.
For the former category, designers were required to design bathroom spaces that were as multifunctional as possible without compromising on living and workspaces.
The Hospitality Bathroom Space Design category praised designs that addressed better health and hygiene standards for an inviting and stress-free hotel experience.
All first prize winners for both categories from every country progressed to the APAC competition round, with finalists from this round subsequently competing at the APAC level, with the winning submission receiving a grand prize of USD $3,000 ($4235 AUD).
The Grand Prize for the Residential Bathroom Space Design Category was awarded to Lê Đức Thịnh of Ha Noi University of Civil Engineering from Vietnam.
Defying the traditional concept that bathrooms should be hidden, Thịnh’s project was praised for its purposeful and seamless integration of the bathroom into the limited space commonly found in urban homes.
Secondly, the Grand Prize for the Hospitality Bathroom Space Design Category was awarded to Teeragiat Sukyoo of Assumption University from Thailand.
This winning design concept incorporates innovative hygiene features – from surfaces to products – that ensure the highest level of hygiene with minimal cleaning effort for hotel guests.
Entries were carefully evaluated by an influential judging panel comprising 39 industry leaders in their own fields, including partners of established architectural firms, professional architects and notable interior designers from the Asia Pacific.
All competing entries were evaluated based on four main criteria of Purposeful Design, Inviting Style, Originality, and Feasibility, and went through two levels of judging – national level and APAC level.
“Good design challenges the status quo while solving real-life challenges. It is heartening to see young designers leveraging purposeful design in their approach to envision tangible solutions that answered our briefs,” says LIXIL Global Design Asia Leader Antoine Besseyre Des Horts.
“With their fresh ideas and perspectives, their works demonstrate how purposeful design can transform the way we live, today and in the future.”
