The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) has been the focal point of attention in Adelaide’s architectural space since the beginning of the project. It’s reputation as Adelaide’s international icon has been further cemented at the recently concluded 2014 SA Architecture Awards. The event was held on Friday, June 4 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

The jury noted: “The [SAHMRI] project operates as a catalyst on multiple levels – a catalyst for the urban regeneration of the precinct; a catalyst and new exemplar for the city; and a catalyst for the state, evidencing step change in attitudes to both design and research.”

Woods Bagot was the big winner of the day receiving multiple awards: the Keith Neighbour Award for Commercial Architecture; the Robert Dickson Award for Interior Architecture; the Jack McConnell Award for Public Architecture; the Derrick Kendrick Award for Sustainable Architecture; and the COLORBOND Award for Steel Architecture.

Troppo Architects’ Café Troppo won the City of Adelaide Prize, which recognises innovation and excellence in enhancing the public realm of the city. Grieve Gillett’s Goolwa Beach House won the John S Chappel Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New).

Woods Bagot’s SAHMRI project was the first iteration in our project initiative tracking projects ‘from concept to completion’. It was subsequently featured as ‘Under Construction’ in AR130–Pawn and as a video and finally as a full project review in AR134–Authority.
