AR is launching a new video series – to run in conjunction with our recurring Under Construction section in the magazine – looking at buildings in the construction phase. The first in the series is Woods Bagot’s South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) headquarters in Adelaide, Australia.

First reviewed in AR130–Pawn, SAHMRI is a particularly prescient point of departure for our new series. The architect’s intelligently use digital technology to expedite design and construction, integrate various stakeholders in a collaborative process, and provide a project that is incredibly innovative in its aesthetics but, more significantly, its function.

Woods Bagot and their client team have developed a project that doesn’t just implement a system recognisable in contemporary architectural terms, but instead creates a new and exciting way to engage with the building processes, as Gavin Chow says in his AR130–Pawn Under Construction, ‘what is impressive is how the project has facilitated from the outset a mode of collaboration and integration, one where parametric testing gives architecture a more powerful pre-build research and decision-making tool. This has secured early client support and confidence, in turn enhancing and extending the role of the architect.’
