In partnership with V-Leader, Wood Marsh has recently completed No.6 Sydney Street, a multi-residential collection of 15 residences in Prahran that feed off the surrounding Orrong Romanis Reserve.

No.6 Sydney Street is the result of carving out an urban block and unpacking the walled streetscape created by the surrounding rectilinear buildings. The team building’s monochromatic visual effect blurs the boundaries between solid and void. 

In a salute to nature, the building appears to be carved from a singular raw material, which is complemented by softened floor plates resting on an irregular grid of feature-fluted columns. 

The firm experimented with flowing forms, imbuing the building with a sense of visual movement, as does the substantial rippling along the undulating facades. Gardens are also scattered sporadically and further mute the sleek features with generous green space.

The base of the building is concealed behind a garden, framing the entry canopy between two recessed fluted columns accessed through a curving pathway. 

The building also mixes tones by pairing natural materials alongside ornate craftsmanship, like a silver-dipped door handle cast in bronze sculpted on a timber door. 

Each residence possesses different access to light, sightlines and terraces. Views of the city and local reserve are framed by glazing and horizontal planes. The interior surfaces pay homage to the exterior form, as inside spaces are softened by curving volumes and plaster.

The marriage between timber and book-matched marble contributes to the building’s resounding feeling of warmth. Additionally, the project’s coupling of travertine mosaic with stained timber and stone adds to the building’s reinterpretation of luxury.

No.6 Sydney Street relies on the skilful use of movement and artistry to develop a building that harmoniously echoes its surrounding natural landscape.
