With the National Architecture Awards coming up this week, we recap this year’s shortlist of the most exemplary projects across Australia.

This year’s awards event will be held at the University of Queensland Advanced Engineering Building, itself a highly acclaimed project – Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL were awarded the Sir Zelman Cowen Award as well as the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture and an Award for Sustainable Architecture at the 2014 National Architecture Awards.

A selection of the country’s award-winning architectural projects are in the running to be doubly rewarded by the AIA, at the National Architecture Awards.

With entries divided into 14 categories, the awards reflect a comprehensive spread of Australian architecture work. Educational Architecture projects are this year given their own awards distinct from the Public Architecture category, indicating the current proliferation of new works in the educational sector.

Immediate past president and jury chair David Karotkin led this year’s jury, along with Indyk Architects design director Shelley Indyk; director of Grieve Gillett + Dimitty Andersen Architects, Steve Grieve; Peta Heffernan of Liminal Studio and Melbourne University professor Philip Goad.

High profile projects expected to take out national awards in November include ARM’s Shrine of Remembrance in the Heritage category, as well as Conrad Gargett Lyons’ Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital for Public, Urban and Interior Architecture. Demonstrating the high calibre of works at the other end of the scale, the Moonlight Cabin residence by Jackson Clements Burrows and MORQ’s Love Story shop are each nominated for the Small Project award. Also looking likely to score at the national awards with nominations in both Heritage and Small Project architecture is #thebarnTAS project by workbylizandalex.

The winners of the 2015 National Architecture Awards will be announced on Thursday 5 November at the University of Queensland Advanced Engineering Building in Brisbane by Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL.
