The juxtaposition of Tokyo’s hyper modern metropolis and the refined simplicity of Japanese zen forms the inspiration for Edo 1, a range of single or two-seat lounges designed by Schamburg + Alvisse.

Manufactured by Allermuir and distributed by Zenith in Australia, the designs reference the urban contradictions of Tokyo, formally known as Edo – a  mega city that manages to strike a fine balance of utilitarianism and resolved aesthetic charm at every turn.

Modular padding in bold yellow, two tones of grey and white make up a restrained yet exuberant contemporary palette; the cubic geometry contrasting with rounded timber legs below. Schamburg + Alvisse have also designed the seating to feature customisable back heights, detachable armrests, loose cushions and a playful selection of base options, ensuring compatibility with most spaces and fitouts. The bulk of the seating appears to rest lightly on its subtle timber legs, perhaps a modern interpretation of Tokyo’s antiquated title, as a ‘floating’ city.

This initial Edo 1 range serves as a preview of Schamburg + Alvisse’s yet-to-be released technology-rich Edo Workscape range, addressing spatial diversity in the work place. The collection caters well to both commercial and institutional interiors, where employee mental health, collaboration, inspiration, as well as the need for private and quiet focus areas are a foremost consideration.
