Winter has arrived but so has The Light in Winter Festival in Melbourne. Now in its eighth year, the Festival spans the month of June and presents a range of installations, events, art, music and performance to entice the populace into the city.

This year, British architect Asif Khan presents an epic installation in Federation Square entitled Radiant Lines. This is his first Australian commission and follows his successful MegaFaces pavilion at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games – a giant structure depicting 3D real life ‘selfies’ of visitors, that generated significant critical acclaim.

Radiant Lines, consists of 40 rings of raw aluminium that appear to float in space. Through light and movement, visitors can interact with the sculpture in the evening creating a visually dynamic spectacle. The aspects of form and space are themes that recur in Khan’s work and Radiant Lines is a showstopper in the city centre.

Khan says, “As architects we find ourselves envious of the deftness of touch an artist can employ to achieve both weight and lightness simultaneously on paper. Here for our first Australian project, we’re exploring the experience of line quality through volume and form.”

The festival runs from 1 – 22 June 2014.
