About the opportunity
The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia. In the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the School was first in Australia, and ranked 16th in the world for Architecture/Built Environment.

The School is focused on the built environment and uses the methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments. We have one of Australia’s best university laboratory infrastructures for research and design in the built environment, including our Lighting Lab, Spatial Audio and Acoustics Lab, Innovation in Applied Design Lab, and the Indoor Environmental Quality Lab. We have a major and ongoing investment in the Design Modelling and Fabrication Lab, including architectural robotics. Our range of disciplines enables us to respond to the great and conflicting global challenges of our time – urbanisation and sustainability.

The University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is expanding its capacities in the area of architectural technologies and is seeking applicants with a demonstrated track record in that area to augment our current academic team. The position of Associate Lecturer/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technologies involves research and research-led teaching in the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments, Bachelor of Design in Architecture, Master of Architecture, and the double degree Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours)/Master of Architecture, offered by the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Depending on interest and capability the successful person may also contribute to the Masters of Heritage Conservation.

About you

We are looking for an Associate Lecturer or Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Architectural Technologies who possesses demonstrated expertise in:

• innovative research in the field, and
• effective and engaging teaching practices within a design studio environment.

It is expected that you will have a successful track record in architectural practice, or a defined research agenda, and that they will be able to substantially contribute to the preparation and delivery of teaching in the School’s architecture programs.

This position will require you to teach in the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments, Bachelor of Design in Architecture, and Master of Architecture offered by the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, including coordination and delivery of all or part of selected core and elective units of study, including key design studios, Architectural/Building Technologies and other sustainability-driven units of study. There will also be opportunities to contribute to technically oriented units in the Master of Heritage Conservation. It is expected that you will be motivated to work collaboratively with colleagues on research projects in the School, university and industry.

The Bachelor of Architecture and Environments (BAE) provides a uniquely broad overview of the built environment through studies in design and architecture, urban planning, sustainability, heritage, building systems and construction and property. Students develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between architects, urban planners, urban designers, heritage conservationists, property developers, engineers, construction managers and other built environment professionals. Our unique program opens the door to a wide range of professions in the field and provides the skills and knowledge to operate successfully in today’s complex and globalised built environment.
