The art of wellness – a sanctuary for renewal

Thoughtful design transforms Ambience Wellness into a serene sanctuary, balancing beauty, functionality and emotional connection.

At the heart of Urbani Design’s philosophy is the belief that great design should benefit everyone, enhancing both form and function in a way that elevates the human experience. For Ambience Wellness, this principle was fundamental in shaping a space that offers more than just aesthetic appeal but serves as an immersive sanctuary for healing and renewal.

Upon entry, design elements guide visitors through carefully curated sensory experiences. Every feature – from the use of earthy materials to the soft, flowing spatial arrangements – was selected to promote relaxation and emotional grounding. “We wanted the design to be an experience in itself, a place where patrons could not only unwind but feel emotionally grounded and restored,” Urbani Design director Sarah Urbani says of the project. This guiding vision ensures that Ambience Wellness is more than just a wellness centre; it is a holistic retreat where design and wellbeing converge.

Lighting plays a critical role in setting the tone of the facility. Warm ambient illumination fosters a sense of calm while highlighting the organic textures and natural finishes that define the space. The interplay of soft curves and tactile surfaces creates a cocoon-like environment, reinforcing a connection to nature and the human form.

Beyond aesthetics, the functionality of the space is equally considered. The layout ensures a seamless flow for both clients and staff, allowing for intuitive movement and an effortless transition through the various zones. Treatment rooms are positioned to maintain privacy while remaining accessible, and the overall spatial planning supports a harmonious balance between tranquillity and practicality.

Overcoming challenges and drawing inspiration

Designing a tranquil retreat within the bustling environment of a shopping centre posed a unique challenge. The need for a quiet, immersive space had to be balanced with the commercial setting, requiring thoughtful solutions to maintain a sense of privacy while still engaging potential customers.

“To achieve this, I carefully planned the rooms to be hidden from mall view while incorporating expanses of screened shopfront glazing,” Urbani says. “A large bronze archway became a focal point, drawing in customers and attracting the attention of passers-by, offering glimpses into the serene interior.”

High ceilings provided an opportunity to explore volume and movement within the space. Sculptural curves and organic forms were incorporated to echo the fluidity of massage therapy and the natural contours of the human body, reinforcing the connection between design and wellness. These elements work together to create an atmosphere that is not only visually engaging but also deeply soothing.

Urbani says biophilic design principles played a key role in shaping the interior. “Natural materials, such as rich timber and textured stone, were chosen to portray a sense of warmth and authenticity,” she says. Sensory elements – including a gentle water feature, ambient fire and soft aromatherapy enhance relaxation, making the environment itself part of the therapeutic experience

Urbani’s background in both construction and interior architecture was instrumental in bridging the gap between vision and execution. “The key was balancing privacy and calm with the need to be visually open and inviting. A large bronze archway became a focal point, drawing in customers and offering glimpses into the serene interior,” she says. Her ability to blend technical knowledge with creative insight ensured that every design decision contributed to a cohesive, restorative space.

Defining success in interior design

A successful wellness centre is more than a beautifully designed space; it’s an environment that foments emotional connection while enhancing the wellbeing of those who experience it. Ambience Wellness exemplifies this approach, creating a setting that is both aesthetically refined and deeply restorative.

The interaction of aesthetics, functionality and emotional resonance is what defines great design. Add to that, thoughtfully curated materials, considered lighting choices and intentional spatial planning to complete the experience. “The concept of “sanctuary” was central to the design as a grounding space where visitors can disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with themselves,” Urbani adds. It is this immersive quality that transforms a space from merely functional to truly impactful.

Wellness, and the design of spaces catering to it, are evolving to meet the growing demand for environments that thoughtfully contribute to relaxation and renewal through the creature comforts that put us at ease. Interiors are no longer simply locations for services. They are integral to the experience itself, with every detail carefully considered to support a sense of balance – from the placement of treatment rooms to the subtle layering of textures and sensory elements present at Ambience Wellness.

“A truly successful interior space goes beyond beauty and functionality,” Urbani says. “It fosters connection and creates an emotional resonance.” This belief is embedded in every aspect of the project, ensuring visitors leave feeling both physically and emotionally restored.
