What can readers expect from inside issue 121?

To celebrate the new IDEA Enduring award, sponsored by Miele, issue 121 asks what enduring design actually means in 2025 – and designers have answered in kaleidoscopic fashion.

Our cover story is a feature on Elio’s Place by Studio Co & Co, a small but mighty studio shortlisted for Emerging Designer of the Year. In the fast-moving sector of hospitality, where enduring design can be elusive, Studio Co & Co hopes to conserve old memories in the reinvention of this all-day trattoria in Melbourne CBD.

Staying in Melbourne, we pay a visit to the soulful home of Field Office Architecture director Nicolas Gutierrez, a converted factory apartment for his young family. We also revisit one of Robin Boyd’s landmarks of modernism – a period lauded for its lasting relevance – and find out how it has been adapted for contemporary life.

inside then takes a very relaxing trip to coastal Victoria to visit About Time, a new bathhouse in Torquay, where landscape by Florian Wild works in tandem with architecture and interiors by Studio Goss.

Also shortlisted for Emerging Designer of the Year, Queenslanders J.AR Office take us behind the design for Cantonese restaurant Central, which seeks to “influence the way people live” within Brisbane.

In a special edition of Designer Selects, five designers share pieces of furniture and lighting that are, in their eyes, timeless icons. inside also profiles Mariah Burton of Sydney-based interior design practice Folk Studio and spends five minutes getting to know Remington Matters, an Adelaide-based furniture designer and maker.

Folk Tales

IDEA’s sustainability judge Jade Whittaker shares her keys to circular interior design, while neuro-inclusive design specialist Dr Ilianna Ginnis highlights the importance of co-designing our built environment to better serve people with profound intellectual disabilities.

The core discourse at play for this edition is the formal recognition of interior design. In light of New South Wales’ looming new Building Bill, we speak to the industry leaders pushing for formal recognition to safeguard the profession.

This issue of inside wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to the new generation revitalising architectural glass design (after it nearly went extinct in Australia). These amazing local artists, designers and makers welcome us into their tight-knit community, where they are injecting a historic craft with bold new designs, colours and ideas.
