Raes on Wategos, long revered as Australia’s foremost boutique sanctuary, has introduced its latest indulgence – Raes Guesthouses.
Situated within a whisper’s distance of the original estate, these guesthouses present an intimate yet grand extension of Raes’ renowned hospitality. The momentous launch coincides with the brand’s anniversary, commemorating three decades of excellence, with the debut of ten opulent suites across two adjacent buildings. Featuring indoor fireplaces, two pristine lap pools and verdant tropical gardens, Raes Guesthouses beckon guests to embrace a redefined vision of effortless sophistication.
“The new property builds on Raes’ enduring reputation for warmth and elegance, while providing a contemporary take on personalised service,” explains Raes on Wategos managing director Jordy Catalano. “The expansion not only meets increasing demand but also preserves the brand’s cherished boutique identity, offering an elevated guest experience steeped in intimacy and connection.”
Designed by renowned interior designer Tamsin Johnson, Raes Guesthouses offer a fresh interpretation of the original property’s spirit, blending Mediterranean influences with Spanish-Hollywood and Balearic styles. “I wanted to build on the soul of the original Raes property, while thoughtfully adapting to the unique architecture of this space,” says Johnson, who incorporated colour and a playful coastal aesthetic to the design.
Each suite is a sanctuary of refined comfort, featuring custom-designed king-sized beds and serene views of either Wategos Beach or verdant gardens. Some suites boast private balconies with sun lounges, while others showcase French linen canopies that evoke a sense of timeless charm.
Johnson’s approach balances the guesthouses with their surroundings, as vintage-glazed tiles and organically moulded plasterwork complement Byron Bay’s coastal splendour. Strong materials, such as marble, establish a connection between the guesthouses and the original hotel, ensuring a cohesive identity across the two properties. The use of earthen pastels in blues and greens, combined with hand-painted joinery and mid-century lighting, creates an inviting atmosphere that feels both distinctive and deeply familiar.
Communal areas, including log fireplaces and lush poolside cabanas, echo the intimate spirit of the original Raes, while providing new spaces for guests to relax and connect. Johnson’s careful layering of textures and colours lends the guesthouses a relaxed sophistication that is as vibrant as it is serene, making them a perfect extension of Raes’ celebrated style.
At the heart of Raes Guesthouses lies a commitment to creating exceptional experiences, with culinary offerings and thoughtful amenities designed to delight every guest. Executive chef Jason Saxby has crafted a menu inspired by the oceanfront setting, with dishes like swordfish katsu sandwiches and spanner crab tagliolini reflecting both the locale and the seasons. The refreshing negroni-soaked watermelon provides a playful poolside treat, ensuring dining is as indulgent as it is memorable.
Two lap pools, each framed by tropical gardens, offer an idyllic retreat. On one side, a 16-metre pool features a waterfall that enhances its tranquil atmosphere, while the eastern pool, heated by solar energy, houses a cabana and lounge area, inviting guests to squander the day under the sun. Guests also enjoy access to the original Raes dining room and the Cellar Bar, as well as the serene Raes spa, ensuring every moment of their stay is steeped in luxury.
With the addition of an in-house chauffeur providing luxury transport, the guesthouses simultaneously continue the Raes legacy and redefine what it means to escape to Australia’s coveted coastline. Whether unwinding by the pool or dining on locally inspired cuisine, guests are invited to experience a new era of hospitality that remains true to Raes’ intimate charm.
