Bridging the divide: Building connections in a fragmented landscape

The Advisory Studio co-founders Steve Coster and Kate Frear’s journey into entrepreneurship began during a pivotal moment in their careers. As seasoned professionals in the architecture and design world, each with more than 20 years of experience, they climbed the ranks of prominent firms in Australia.

At the time, Coster specialised in workplace strategy and design, while Frear focused on residential and mixed-use development. Although they had occasionally crossed paths, it wasn’t until they took a step back from their corporate roles that their paths fully aligned.

While Frear navigated the life-changing experience of motherhood, Coster had been taking time off to recharge. During that period, mutual acquaintances suggested they connect, pointing to their similar aspirations and experiences. Their eventual meeting at a networking event was serendipitous. As they shared their professional journeys, it became clear that both had felt the weight of their corporate roles and were yearning for a different way of working.

“Through our conversations, it became clear that we not only shared professional backgrounds but also complementary insights into the industry’s challenges and opportunities,” Coster recalls.

The pair discussed their frustrations with traditional practices and the gaps they perceived in the market, recognising a need for a fresh approach that could deliver more value to clients. This alignment led them to establish The Advisory Studio, a venture that aimed to uncloak the architecture and design process for clients who might not be well-versed in the industry.

Frear says they envisioned a space where their expertise could be harnessed to provide tailored advice and innovative solutions, bridging the gap between complex design principles and client needs.

The Advisory Studio represented more than just a business; it was a culmination of their experiences and a platform for the change they both wanted to see in their industry. Together, they set out to create a collaborative environment where they could draw on their strengths, helping clients navigate the intricacies of design with clarity and confidence. Their shared vision and mutual respect formed the bedrock of their partnership, propelling them toward a future where they could redefine the architecture landscape on their own terms.

Demystifying the ‘a and d’ process

As Coster and Frear embarked on their journey with The Advisory Studio, they recognised the importance of understanding their clients’ individual needs. Drawing from their extensive backgrounds, they sought to create a consulting experience that was both collaborative and enlightening.

Coster explains: “Our goal was to demystify the architecture and design process for our clients. We wanted  them to feel empowered and informed every step of the way.”

This philosophy has shaped the duo’s approach, enabling them to build strong relationships based on trust and transparency. By prioritising open communication, they promote an environment where clients can express their visions without hesitation.

Frear echoes this sentiment, adding, “We’re not just here to deliver a service; we’re here to listen and guide. Each project is an opportunity to partner with our clients, ensuring their aspirations are at the forefront.” Her commitment to collaboration underlines their mission to transform the traditional client-consultant dynamic into a more inclusive partnership.

Both Coster and Frear recognise the evolving landscape of architecture and design, with clients increasingly seeking personalised experiences. “We’ve seen a shift,” Coster says. “Clients are more discerning and want to be involved in the creative process. They crave authenticity and a deeper connection to their projects.”

This awareness has driven them to tailor their consulting practice, blending their expertise with a genuine desire to serve their clients. As Frear sees it, “At The Advisory Studio, we believe that every client’s story matters. By understanding their journeys, we can create spaces that truly reflect who they are.” Through this client-centric approach, Coster and Frear have not only redefined their careers but also transformed how architecture and design are experienced in their community.

Creating unity through strategic partnerships

As Coster and Frear continue to carve out their niche in the architecture and design landscape, they remain acutely aware of the fragmentation that can exist within the industry. Their mission transcends client relationships, focussing on community among various stakeholders, from property developers to design firms and beyond.

Reflecting on their recent collaboration with a property developer focused on refining its interactions with the design industry, Coster shares, “We’ve been working on streamlining their processes over time. Our aim is to establish long-term relationships that not only enhance project outcomes but also bring clarity to the often convoluted design process.” By acting as facilitators, Coster and Frear help synchronise the interests of diverse stakeholders, recognising that the complexities of modern projects require a collective approach.

As strategic advisors, they provide leadership coaching and support for directors that emphasises the empowerment of leaders within their practices. By nurturing leadership, they contribute to an environment where creativity can thrive. This commitment to mentorship reinforces their belief that effective design emerges not only from individual brilliance but also from collaborative synergy.

Frear encapsulates their philosophy this way: “At the heart of everything we do is the desire to make excellent design happen more consistently. Now is the right time to highlight the value of design, especially as everything is being questioned. We need to guide stakeholders through this tricky landscape to ensure design remains a vital part of our society, independent of bias and firmly recognised for its worth.”

Through their work, they are not just bridging divides – they are laying the foundation for a more interconnected and thriving design community.
