Capitol Grand, the tallest skyscraper outside of the city centre of Melbourne, has been approved for construction by VCAT. Designed by Bates Smart Architects, the 50-storey tower will house 450 residential apartments. The proposed tower, by developer Larry Kestelman, was originally rejected in 2008.

Capitol Grand, at the corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street in South Yarra, will provide Melbourne with a new architectural landmark with dynamic character, as well as a new residential and luxury retail development.

Bates Smart, who has previously worked on such projects as 180 Thomas Street and Pier One Hotel in Sydney, has designed the elegant and slender skyscraper using three elliptical forms, allowing light and shadow to play across the surface of the building. A paved garden square will lead into the ground floor, providing a luxurious entrance for residents.

The retail section of the tower has been designed to allow a generous amount of natural light to flood in, illuminating both levels of the shopping and dining section of the building. Residents will also have access to a pool pavilion that extends into the elevated gardens, providing residents with a relaxed environment, along with a gymnasium and club lounge.

Capitol Grand aims to create an environment that that is both metropolitan and a sanctuary for residents and consumers.
