Hames Sharley has appointed three senior leaders across its practice as part of a nationwide commitment to encourage a new age of built spaces.

Accepting the role of director are Retail and Town Centre Portfolio Leader Harold Perks in Melbourne, and National Design Forum Leader Derek Hays in Perth. In Adelaide, Studio Leader Leon Gouws has been elevated to senior associate.

Hames Sharley managing director Caillin Howard says each appointment was a result of careful selection among the practice’s top leaders to drive architectural change across the country with fresh ideas and unique perspectives.

“Harold Perks’ experience has earned him a place as one of the country’s foremost thought leaders and designers within the retail sector,” says Howard. “In the last decade, has gained considerable experience by working in the practice’s largest studio before moving on to the senior leadership role in Victoria.”

Howard credits Perks for his instrumental contribution to the growth in both personnel and portfolio at Hames Sharley’s Melbourne studio.

“Harold has fostered a tremendous studio culture that has seen his team grow rapidly into a formidable local practice backed by the group’s depth of knowledge and collective experience.

Derek Hays

Derek Hays

“Derek Hays is approaching 20 years of service with Hames Sharley and his rise within our community is unique in the practice’s history, because it hasn’t relied on his leadership or creative portfolios alone,” says Howard. “He is renowned for his development and leadership of the National Design Forum, a body that has consistently put in place systems and inspiration to create better design outcomes for clients and the communities we serve.

“Finally, Leon Gouws has shown exemplary leadership skills and a unique creative perspective in South Australia after only a year with Hames Sharley.”

All three appointees will continue to carry out Hames Sharley’s 2019-20 mission to reinterpret Australia’s built environment and usher a new decade of building designs and creative spaces.
