Showcasing an elegant, respectful balance between sustainable design practices and connection to Country, global flooring solutions company Interface has partnered with construction firm Sheldon to create a new kind of future-facing office space.
In a bold approach to traditional office design, Interface’s creative input for the look and feel of the Sheldon head office at 60 Carrington Street in Sydney seamlessly assembles sustainability and mental wellbeing, with carefully selected materials and palettes.
At its core is the combined influence of environmental impact and connection to Country, with both Interface and Sheldon manufacturing locally within Australia as a model of locally sourced materials and labour.
Free-flow floor plans keep the interior space airy and unrestricted.
The careful vetting process of Interface’s production practice made them a fitting choice for the project, thanks to their ethical commitments to reducing negative environmental impact. The reusable design of their flooring systems aided the circular economy while ensuring long-lasting durability into the future.
Sheldon designer Tegan Fordred says the “living showroom’s” effortless transitions were inspired by nature.
“We wanted people to feel a sense of belonging, as if the space itself was giving them a warm hug,” Fordred says.
Special attention was paid to the seamless floor transitions to create a setting that flows naturally. The office relies on plentiful natural light to aid an overall sense of relaxation. Circadian lighting softly transitions in brightness across the day to support the organic bodily rhythms of the space’s occupants.
Plentiful natural light gives the office interior an invitational, soothing quality.
Fusing old and new materials in order to create a warm, soothing atmosphere, the new office hopes to be a benchmark in contemporary corporate architecture. In all areas of form and function, the design proves how workplaces of the future can provide human connection without compromising on sustainability.
Sheldon and Interface’s partnership is a vibrant showcase of creativity and belonging in the workplace – how it can be aided, not impeded, by sustainability guidelines.
“Sheldon and Interface share a vision for sustainability,” says Interface director of marketing activations APAC Trish McCann. “Together, we applied principles of a circular economy – modular design and designing for reuse – all without compromising on the beauty or functionality of the space.”
Warm, earthy tones gently reflect the light outward and maintain an attractive visual temperature across the entire space.
The design and production partnership served the community and the environment in equal measure, supporting local jobs and reducing carbon emissions by manufacturing locally within Australia.
Both Interface and Sheldon embraced connection to Country as a guiding principle in their design ideation, ensuring culture and community were keenly served in the development process.
Interface’s flooring products ensured the project met Green Star and WELL rating targets, as well as gracefully absorbing sound with a keen visual impact. Every detail in the timeless “living showroom” is made to impress and built to last.
