A new recipe for alfresco living: inside Miele’s ‘Dreams’ Outdoor Kitchen

On a recent evening on Sydney’s leafy Lower North Shore, Miele and Signature Appliances brought some of the city’s leading designers together for a celebration of an Australian home essential: the outdoor grill.

The occasion was the NSW launch of Miele’s ‘Dreams’ Outdoor Kitchen, the company’s first product line dedicated to premium outdoor living. Signature Appliances’ Willoughby showroom provided the ideal setting, with guests moving between the showroom floor and a sun-dappled private terrace – a scene that captured the spirit of Australian summer entertaining.

Charcuterie, summer cocktails and a caviar bar set the tone before guests gathered on the terrace for a live cooking demonstration showcasing the ‘Dreams’ kitchen in action.

Australian Design Review’s brand and digital manager, Alvin Wu, welcomed guests and acknowledged Country before introducing Peter Harris, general manager of Bing Lee. Harris spoke of the pride Bing Lee and Signature Appliances share in bringing the range to NSW, before handing over to Joel Gebert, Miele’s business development manager of Outdoor Cooking.

Gebert took guests through the design and development of the range, its grilling technology and craftsmanship, while Miele senior culinary expert Karen Abercromby and her team put the kitchen to work, cooking up a storm.

At the heart of the ‘Dreams’ range is the Fire Pro grill. “‘Dreams’ began five years ago, when Miele acquired Otto Wilde Grillers,” Gebert explained. “We pulled apart the grill and rebuilt it. The quality, design and technology that you expect from our indoor appliances has now translated into the outdoor Fire Pro. It’s all about precision cooking.”

The result is a grill that reads real-time temperatures across five heat points and relays them to a digital thermostat. Cooks can adjust settings using either the grill’s control knob, much like a cooktop, or Miele’s digital app. The technology removes much of the guesswork from grilling, allowing high- and low-heat cooking to happen simultaneously with precision.

Flexibility is another defining feature. Rather than a fixed installation, ‘Dreams’ is designed as a modular family of components. The Fire Pro can stand alone or be combined with a gas cooktop, top-heat sear grill, worktops, storage drawers, boards, refrigerator and integrated double sink.

The system is also fully portable. Adjustable feet allow each unit to be levelled across uneven ground, while concealed castors make repositioning easy. And with every component climate-tested in Miami, Florida, the range is built to withstand even extreme tropical conditions.

For Miele NSW state manager of projects Alice Byrnes, this adaptability is central to the appeal. “Miele’s designers thought of everything. As your lifestyle changes, you can change your outdoor kitchen. You can add elements, you can take it with you. You can make it as grand or as minimal as you would like. And the best part – in all alfresco environments, you can cook within control to achieve the best result.”

The proof, of course, was in the cooking. Guests ‘yummed’ and ‘wowed’ their way through juicy barbecued prawns and perfectly grilled chicken – a delicious demonstration that the ‘Dreams’ Outdoor Kitchen delivers on Miele’s ‘Immer Besser’ (Forever Better) ethos.
