About the opportunity
Westmead is a major priority for the University’s next era of strategic growth. The University is working with our partners at Westmead to grow our student body at Westmead to 6,000 by 2030, with a commensurate growth in academic activities. Importantly, this growth is expected to diversify and innovate the University’s offerings in research and education, as Westmead introduces entirely new programs and explores new ways of learning and working.
The University has committed to involving all disciplines – not just those that are health related – to contribute to this venture. In short, this strategy proposes a redefinition of the University’s institutional framework to help the Westmead site scale up its interdisciplinary operations into what we call the Westmead Living Lab, and nurture a Living Lab culture amongst all Precinct partners and their associated constituencies.
Thus far the University has established two design-focused undergraduate units of study on the Westmead Precinct and appointed one academic within the University of Sydney, School of Architecture, Design and Planning’s Design Lab to support the development of undergraduate and postgraduate education and to begin to grow research in design as applied to health and healthcare on the Precinct.
This position is being established to further develop the education and research activities in design applied to medicine and health on the Westmead Precinct. In particular it is intended that the successful applicant will work closely with academic staff and stakeholders on both the Westmead Precinct and at the Camperdown Campus of the University of Sydney to ensure the development of a dynamic and inclusive culture of health-related design education and research.
We are seeking applicants with an outstanding record of research and teaching in one of the following broad areas: interaction design, human-computer interaction, design innovation or design thinking. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their research draws on one of these areas to achieve innovative research outcomes and solve real-world problems across a range of disciplines, with a clear demonstration of impact in the health and medical domain.
The role involves research and teaching within the Design Lab and the School’s design programs across the Camperdown and Westmead campuses, both on an undergraduate and postgraduate level. The successful candidate will be expected to build research collaborations within the School, the University, industry, and beyond, and to apply for competitive research funding to develop their research area.
About you
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance in recruiting talent aligned to these values in the pursuit of research excellence. It is expected that applicants will have a successful track record and/or a well-defined research agenda in interaction design, human-computer interaction, design innovation or design thinking, and a demonstrated research track record in the health and/or medical domain. More detailed criterion to be addressed is outlined in the application form.
About us
The Westmead Precinct is undergoing development that will involve investments in excess of $1 billion. This redevelopment will result in Sydney having one of the largest and most integrated precincts focussed on health and wellbeing in Australia. It also provides an opportunity to transform an array of innovative networks that combine excellence in research, education, and practice into a large scale, world renowned Living Lab concerned with health and wellbeing. The Living Lab will build on the University’s collaborations in the precinct since its inception. The Westmead Academic Strategy will guide the University’s engagement with other partners involved with the Precinct redevelopment – the hospitals, research institutes, pathology service, and many others including the Western Sydney Primary Health Network. All have committed to developing a new type of partnership over the next three decades, building on long-standing relations. The partnership is driven by a common commitment to ensure impending investments do not just modernise ‘business as usual’, but rather establish more sustainable and appropriate health and associated services for the populations supported by the precinct partners.
The appointee will become a member of the Design Lab in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Founded in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning (AD&P) is an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, attracting the highest quality applicants in Australia and from abroad. The Design Lab has a distinguished reputation for leading design research. Over the past 40 years its research focus has evolved from design cognition to interaction design, creative technologies and using design as an innovation method. The Design Lab already engages with research at the Westmead Precinct and the successful applicant will join this team of academics while at the same time leading the development of their own design research agenda in the health and medical area and developing the educational activities of the Design Lab on the Westmead Precinct and Camperdown.
Since our inception 160 years ago, the University of Sydney has led to improve the world around us. We believe in education for all and that effective leadership makes lives better. These same values are reflected in our approach to diversity and inclusion, and underpin our long-term strategy for growth. We’re Australia’s first university and have an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. Across our campuses, we employ over 7600 academic and non-academic staff who support over 60,000 students.
