The IDEA shortlist edition of inside magazine is on newsstands now and immortalises all the entries shortlisted in the 2024 Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).
Issue 119, also known as the IDEA 2024 shortlist edition, spotlights the interior designers, product designers and architects steering the industry in new and creative directions.
Talking to those shortlisted in IDEA as well as other leading and emerging voices, this issue foregrounds the people behind the designs as a way to create connections between the built world and the cultural context in which architecture and design exist.
Underneath the cover of issue 119, featuring Nightingale Evergreen by Clare Cousins Architects, inside’s managing editor Jessica Agoston-Cleary speaks to IDEA jury chair Clare Cousins about the essential value of good design.
Meanwhile, Michael Alvisse, this year’s sustainability judge and co-founder of the furniture design studio Schamburg + Alvisse, shares what it means for design to be truly sustainable.
Jefa Greenaway, director of Greenaway Architects, academic and leading Indigenous design champion, explores cultural intelligence and the bright future that lies ahead for Australian design through intentional equity and authentically working with Country.
Breathe Architecture co-founder and design director Jeremy McLeod opens up about his passion for humanity and the planet, and explores how design can be a tool for good in the world.
inside also shares a look into Cera Stribley’s new Melbourne office on the top floor of an old textile warehouse, with amenities that “enhance the transition between work and home”, according to associate interior designer Juan Hernandez-Flores.
With the help of the creative director of global lighting design studio FPOV Ingrid Baldwin, this issue also zooms in on the power of lighting to elevate architecture and design.
These industry titans share pages with newcomers making waves in the industry. Some Studio’s founders, who have just been shortlisted for the IDEA Emerging Designer of the Year, offer honest reflections on starting up their small Sydney practice. We also steal five minutes with Joanne Odisho, a Melbournian who laid down her interior design credentials to become a furniture designer.
Of course, amid these profiles and thoughtful discussions we have moments of design delight, including two new sections.
The first is Designer Selects, where we’ve asked interior designers, including Yasmine Ghoniem, Alison Page, Brahman Perera, Nickolas Gurtler, Manuela Millan, Amelda Wilde, Ryan Genesin and Pascale Gomes-McNabb to select the furniture and design pieces they’re obsessed with right now.
The second is Tech Corner – a round-up of cutting-edge tools and products that architects and designers need to know about.
