Designer Rugs has launched the exquisite Opal collection, its latest collaboration with celebrated Australian designer Emma Elizabeth. 

The new series of handmade rugs draws its inspiration from the iridescent beauty and layered mystery of Australian opals, translating the gemstone’s shifting colours into four distinct, textural designs: Fire Sovereign, Celestine, Aurora Terra and Aqua Lumina.

Translating physical phenomena into the Opal collection

As Elizabeth’s latest collection with Designer Rugs, Opal is a sophisticated continuation of her practice of reinterpreting physical imagery into soft, woven forms.

“My inspiration always begins within the physical world – materials, surfaces or phenomena that catch my eye,” Elizabeth tells Australian Design Review. “From there, I start abstracting. I take that source of inspiration and print it, find samples, place, style and photograph it. Shred the image up and weave it.”

Opal marks a move into something more ethereal for the designer. “While the language of Opals is more fluid and luminous, it still sits conceptually in the same family as my other designs,” Elizabeth says.

Fire Sovereign

Fire Sovereign captures the vibrant energy of its namesake opal.

Each rug artfully captures the essence of a renowned opal, exploring the elegant interplay of geology’s permanence and the fleeting nature of light.

Capturing the vibrant energy of its namesake opal, Fire Sovereign brings the fiery drama to the collection. It’s a statement piece – bold, dynamic and unapologetically expressive, like fire caught in stone. Bursts of red and orange seem to dance across its surface, achieved through layered, gestural patterns and warm, shifting tones. 

“I believe it would thrive in bold interiors with strong architectural gestures or rich materiality, like brass, walnut or marble,” Elizabeth says.

Aurora Terra

Aurora Terra resembles an earthy, floor-based landscape.

If Fire Sovereign “shouts loudly”, Aurora Terra “hums softly”, Elizabeth says. “Aurora Terra is the most serene and sculptural of the collection.”

Designed to be an earthy, floor-based landscape, it features sweeping fields of deep blue, emerald green and shimmering gold.

“It could be ideal for refined, minimalist interiors or spaces that focus on form and calm,” Elizabeth says. “Think tonal palettes, stone, linen and subtle textures.”

Aqua Lumina

Aqua Lumina is the perfect centrepiece for a restful space.

The Aqua Lumina rug mimics the serene fluidity of light that plays beneath the surface of water. This contemplative design features soft blues, gentle greens and creamy whites that ripple across the surface, creating a sense of calm movement and reflection, as if the opal itself had been poured across the floor.

It is a serene and meditative piece, designed to foster a connection to nature and support quiet moments. The subtle shifts in colour and light create a tranquil atmosphere, making it the perfect centrepiece for a space dedicated to rest and reflection.

“It brings a calm sensuality, working well in lounges, bedrooms or areas of pause in those nooks that you just don’t know what to do with, where you want to feel enveloped by colour,” Elizabeth says.

Celestine

Celestine focuses on the way light travels across a precious stone.

Inspired by the ethereal beauty of the rare Halley’s Comet opal, this rug captures a sense of cosmic wonder and fleeting brilliance. Delicate yet expansive, its design focuses on the way light travels across a precious stone, creating streaks and flashes of celestial colour.

The Celestine rug features linear textures and soft transitions of icy blues, pale yellows and subtle greens, evoking the opal’s transient beauty. It is designed to spark a sense of wonder and discovery with every soft step, transforming a space into a serene, luminous landscape. 

“It would work beautifully in airy, contemporary spaces where you want a sense of lift or flow. It complements natural light and open volumes, adding a quiet dynamism underfoot,” Elizabeth says.

A one-of-a-kind collection

The rugs in the Opal collection add a touch of luxury to any space, from refined private residences to distinguished commercial environments.

They have been meticulously handmade using premium New Zealand wool and delicately accented with bamboo silk, ensuring a plush feel and remarkable visual depth.
