Thought leaders in the interior design community and their clients assembled for a number of intimate, insights-driven conversations with a focus on sustainability, the circular economy and what the future of design could look like.

As part of its illuminating ‘Conversations for a Better World’ series, MillerKnoll hosted a pair of industry events across Sydney and Melbourne and assembled some of the country’s top creatives for an evening of valuable dialogue on the possibilities of design itself.

The two events, hosted in late August, inform the broader vision of MillerKnoll to engage the interior design community and their trusted clients in a series of achievable steps toward a more sustainable future.

A valuable opportunity to connect and share ideas.

Rooted in the eco-friendly principles of the circular economy, whereby waste materials are recirculated into the production cycle, these discussions represent important affirmative action from one of the world’s leading influencers in contemporary design and interior architecture.

“These conversations are more than moments around a table,” said MillerKnoll senior marketing manager APAC & MEA James Barnby. “They’re about creating meaningful connections and inspiring design thinking that drives both environmental and cultural change.”

Where curiosity connects with innovation

The two events were consciously staged in dining spaces curated to reflect MillerKnoll’s decades-long belief in the power of design to unify all sectors of the built environment. The conversations in question revolved around carbon reduction, circularity and sustainability – all themes that occupy a significant place at the centre of MillerKnoll’s strategy, as detailed in the organisation’s Better World Report.

Knoll’s sustainability promises were on clear display.

Keeping on-trend with these commitments to sustainability, the report also tracks the company’s progress in reducing emissions and waste, as well as sourcing more sustainable building materials for its diverse product portfolio.

The events were both centred on open dialogue in which unique industry insights and learnings could be freely shared, but there was also the notable presence of curated product displays.

Open dialogue and shared ideals.

The product installations shown at the events underlined MillerKnoll’s keen environmental ambitions, namely in the reduction of carbon waste through innovations in low-impact products, as well as sourcing sustainable, circular-focused materials in the creation of designs that are as timeless in form as they are durable in structure.

The core driving force behind these efforts to source 100 percent recycled or bio-based materials informs MillerKnoll’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and eliminate all waste by 2050.

The comprehensive product lineup on display was comprised of iconic pieces that wholly embody these environmental principles. The pieces on display were the Herman Miller Mirra 2 Chair – redesigned with a significantly reduced carbon footprint – as well as the Muuto Fiber Chair, now crafted with post-industrial recycled plastic and FSC-certified wood fibre; and the NaughtOne Pippin Chair, purpose-built for longevity and disassembly to facilitate a wholly circular lifecycle.

A concept that delivers on its promise

In bringing together the brightest minds in interior design, along with their curious and supportive roster of loyal clients, MillerKnoll has served the industry with a collaborative platform for shared dialogue. As such, guests were invited to reflect on how design delivers valuable impact across all spheres of the personal and the professional.
