Retrofitting for Energy Efficiency

October 3, 2011

A three-day forum in Melbourne will examine how to improve current retrofitting projects, to achieve the best solutions from the city’s existing building stock.

A three-day forum taking place in Melbourne this October will examine industry developments, government initiatives and funding opportunities in support of retrofitting existing building stock.

Many experts believe current retrofitting projects are inefficient, do not cater to tenants and do not provide an ideal return on investment. They argue that many current retrofitting projects focus on increasing short-term rents rather than adding real asset value to an existing building.

“A lot of refurbishment is done to make the building look good, appeal to the senses, and just capitalise on their location. Not enough is considered on how the building can be made more appealing to tenants,” argues Paul de Podolinsky, a partner of Gray Puksand in Melbourne. “We need to search harder and wider for smarter solutions.”

The event will look at initiatives including tax breaks, reduced loan rates and retrofitting projects such as Melbourne’s 1200 Buildings program to explore how retrofit projects can be improved.
