*Dancing in the Dark: Small Solutions to Big Problems*

This year’s Fringe Furniture exhibition will take place in Abbotsford under the theme, ‘Dancing in the Dark’. Inspired by the Bruce Springsteen song, participating designers have proposed their own small solutions to creating a greener, more sustainable future.

For the first time, the 2011 Fringe Furniture show will be delivered in partnership with the Abbotsford Convent. Melbourne Fringe Creative Producer, Neal Harvey, asked this year’s artists and designers to take inspiration from the Bruce Springsteen song, ‘Dancing in the Dark’. “It’s a song about frustration. About wanting something, but not knowing what that something is. And what do you do with those feelings? Bruce suggests you dance in the dark. It’s a small solution to a big problem.” Each piece in the exhibition is like a tiny dance step, he says, leading us towards a smarter, healthier and more beautiful future.

The exhibition is a core component in the Melbourne Fringe festival program, and serves as an important and popular platform for innovative art, craft, furniture and design.

First started almost 27 years ago by artist Bruce Filley, Fringe Furniture is dedicated to showcasing contemporary work that pushes boundaries and explores what is meant by the term ‘furniture’. The exhibition aims to offer a forum for discussion between established and emerging designers. Designers will also have the opportunity to apply for a mentoring program, offering guidance and the opportunity to develop new work.

A number of awards are presented as part of the exhibition, which runs from 21 September until 8 October at the Abbotsford Convent.
