Total Immersion Summer School is an architecture studio program for undergraduate architecture students, held in 2011 for the seventh time.

Held at Pittwater YHA, North of Sydney, the program is “Total Immersion” – which makes the residential formula so special and participants walk, talk, eat and sleep architecture. Attendees experience real quality time with some of the best teachers (and architects) in Australia.

The principal tutors for the program are *Richard Leplastrier*, seminal architect and teacher, RAIA Gold Medallist and winner of the 2004 International ‘Spirit of the Nature Wood Architecture Award’; *Peter Stutchbury*, leading Australian practitioner, winner of RAIA National Housing and Public Buildings Awards and 2008 International Iron and Steel Extreme Housing competition; and *Lindsay Johnston*, former Head of Architecture at Newcastle, visiting professor, ESD correspondent and authority on environmental architecture. Special guest tutors are yet to be announced.

The program will involve a design project to be located on a site at or near the Pittwater YHA and will include detailed brief and site analysis and preparation, working in small groups, of a design proposal for presentation at a ‘big crit’ day at the end. Emphasis will be upon study of natural topography, climate, flora and fauna and design responsiveness to place. There will also be particular attention to freehand drawing as a medium for observation and analysis and design presentations will be through hand drawings and sketch models. Basic drawing and model making materials and equipment are included in the cost.

There will be an excursion to some stunning new houses in the area and a visit to Peter Stutchbury’s office in Newport. The ferry ride to and from Church Point includes a scenic trip around Pittwater and the cost is also included in the fee. Kayaks are available to hire at YHA.

“The value the students derive from attending your program is unquestioned and they’re almost incoherent with enthusiasm when they come back. You get our support because the job of education is just that – to provide opportunities for people to get enthusiastic about architecture” – quote from the Head of a leading Australasian School of Architecture 2010.

Fee AUS$1430 (AUS$1300 + GST)
Includes tuition, accommodation, all meals, ferry transfers, scenic Pittwater Cruise, coach excursion to houses, visit to Richard Leplastrier house Lovett Bay, and visit to Peter Stutchbury offices Newport.
