The Float pendant light, a hand-turned design crafted from a large block of recycled agglomerate cork, is a collaboration between Benjamin Hubert and Scandinavian lighting manufacturer & Tradition.
Made using traditional woodworking techniques, the light is a striking design that is produced with minimal impact on the environment. The simplicity of the object’s form draws the focus to the materiality of the cork. When lit, the light reflected within the shade produces a warm glow emphasised by the cork.
The recycled cork content is sourced from the waste product in wine stopper manufacture. The waste produced by turning the blocks to create the design is collected and reused to create new cork blocks, ensuring as much of the material is used as possible.
British designer Benjamin Hubert won the 100% Design, Blueprint Award for ‘Most promising designer 2008’ and launched a selection of furniture and lighting ranges at the 2009 London Design Festival. Hubert’s Float pendant is now being sold in Australia through Great Dane.
Drainage is often the forgotten workhorse of the building and design function. Yet drainage maintains a simple albeit vital purpose.
